This year I took note of one song that stood out to me each day, partially as a challenge to expand my listening taste, but also as a design opportunity. When thinking at the end of the year about creative ways to present the story of this year, the idea of hosting an award show jumped out at me because it is a natural way to bring together musicians from across all genres and celebrate the music that made our year. The difference between The Jamie’s and traditional music awards is that these are not just songs released during this year. All of the nominees were recorded in SOTD at least once, which qualifies them for any of these awards.

ARTIST OF THE YEAR

These artists dominated my charts all year, and I couldn’t imagine my music taste without them. Some of these are new faces, others have been mainstays in my playlists for years. I wish they all could be winners, but only one truly made the year their own. Spanning several genres and plenty of styles, these are the top dogs from this year.

BEST NEW ARTIST

New is a relative term. Sometimes you are there as a future star starts to gain traction, sometimes you catch on after a sophomore or junior album release. Whether it started with a single that really grabbed me or the first listen of an EP with new perspective, these new faces made quite the statement statement on my music taste this year.

To qualify artists can’t have any past Spotify Wrapped appearances.

ONE HIT WONDERS

I know that the term one hit wonder might be taken with a negative connotation, but this isn’t meant as a sign of disrespect for any of these artists. They are all supremely talented with tons of hits. But, with only one entry each on Song of the Day this year, they made sure they were not going to be forgotten. And they were not.
